5 electrical safety tips every homeowner must know
An MCB that trips is doing its job. A plug that is warm to the touch is not. Five checks that take a minute each and prevent most house fires and shocks.

Electrical faults cause a large share of household fires in India, and most of them announce themselves weeks in advance. These five checks need no tools and no training — only the habit of looking.
1. Never bypass a tripping MCB
If a breaker trips repeatedly, something is drawing more than the wire can carry or there is a short. Resetting it again and again, or replacing it with a higher rating, removes the only protection you have. Book an electrician to find the cause.
2. Warm plugs and brown sockets
A socket that discolours or a plug that is warm after an hour is a loose contact arcing inside. Stop using it; it is the most common start of a fire behind a TV unit or a fridge.
3. One heavy appliance per socket
Geysers, ACs, washing machines and microwaves each need their own 16 A point. A multi-plug or an extension board is never a substitute, however good the brand.
4. Test the earth and the ELCB/RCCB monthly
Press the test button on your RCCB once a month; it should trip instantly. If your home has no RCCB, or metal appliances give a faint tingle, the earth is faulty — this is the single most important job to give an electrician.
5. Water and inverters
Keep inverter batteries off the floor, ventilated and away from the kitchen or bathroom wall. Never run a cable under a carpet or through a wet area. When in doubt, a verified electrician on Hi-Partner can audit a whole house in under an hour.
